Cholesterol Checks

Cholesterol is a type of fat found in your blood. There are two main types of cholesterol – HDL cholesterol referred to as good cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, referred to as bad cholesterol because it can stick to the walls of your arteries, narrowing them and reducing blood flow. You can see more information about cholesterol and heart cardiovascular disease here on the Irish Heart Foundation website.

One of the best ways to prevent cardiovascular disease is to keep your cholesterol at a healthy level. In a consultation, your doctor will discuss any relevant risk factors including family history, diet and lifestyle, prior health issues etc. and if appropriate, will test your cholesterol level through a simple fasting blood test. Depending on the results, the doctor may recommend diet and exercise changes, medication or further tests if necessary.
