For many children, their first visit to the GP is at two weeks old. The Maternity and Infant Care Scheme (also known as ‘Combined Care’) combines antenatal care provided by your GP and a maternity unit of your choice. These antenatal visits are free for all pregnant women. As part of the schedule of care, the baby is seen by the doctor at 2 weeks for a heart and weight check. At 6 weeks, both the baby and the mother have a check-up with the GP.
