2 Week & 6 Week Checks

For many children, their first visit to the GP is at two weeks old. The Maternity and Infant Care Scheme (also known as ‘Combined Care’) combines antenatal care provided by your GP and a maternity unit of your choice. These antenatal visits are free for all pregnant women. As part of the schedule of care, the baby is seen by the doctor at 2 weeks for a heart and weight check. At 6 weeks, both the baby and the mother have a check-up with the GP.

It is important that you are registered with the practice as early as possible in your pregnancy, to ensure your antenatal, 2-week and 6-week check visits are paid for under the scheme.

Your baby’s 6 Week Check is a good opportunity to register your child for the Under 6’s Card, as only those with a valid card can avail of free GP care.
